Der Greif is a project for contemporary photography and literature with a focus on photography. It addresses itself to people with an affinity for image and text.
Der Greif is a print-magazine, online-platform, curatorial team and joint project for and with photographers and authors from all over the world.
The artistic core and root of the project is the printed and ad-free magazine. It shows the works of photographers and authors of different origins in a holistic piece of art.
The website is an exhibition-, communication-, and information-platform for participants and anyone interested. It contains information about the magazine, published artists and supporters, an online-shop, as well as a blog. Participating artists are presented in artist-features and have the opportunity to post on the blog.
The main idea behind the magazine is to combine photographic and literary works of artists from all over the world. The editors of Der Greif combine single photographs with texts and put into a completely new context. For the issues of the print magazine no predetermined themes are provided – they are rather developed during the curatorial process. The combination and the resulting complete work (which is more like book than a magazine) is core and distinctiveness of Der Greif. Thus the magazine is not a portfolio-magazine, but evolves from an abundance of works of various artists.
The magazine is produced in large format (24,5 x 34,5 cm) and has a limited print run of 2.500 copies (each numbered manually). Since its foundation interest, attention and circulation has steadily grown . For the seventh and current issue more than 1.700 photographers and authors from 79 countries have submitted about 8.000 works. Der Greif is available at more than 45 book stores all over the world, including Printed Matter in New York, Tsutaya Bookshop in Tokyo, Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, DoYouReadMe? in Berlin, as well as Buchhandlung Walther König in Cologne and in the Museumsquartier in Vienna.
Curation & Layout
The magazine’s diversified and haptic layout interacts in a very sensitive way with the carefully curated photographs and texts, providing space for intuition, composition, haptic, noise and profundity. Questions about the perception of authorship, the artists’ theoretical discourses and topics are replaced by the viewers’ emotions. Der Greif creates new spaces, a world of phantasy, irritation, opened up by Der Greif’s artwork and newly combined content. It’s up to the viewer to fill the magazine with his own, ever new emotions.
Photographers and authors from all parts of the world are allowed to submit their works via the upload-form. After a short registration process each participating artist gets access to a private account where he/she can edit, delete and/or change submitted works during submission-phases. Since no predetermined subjects are provided artists can submit texts and photographs of all kinds. And all this is for free.
Based on the participating artists’ trust in the editors’ artistic work and sensitive curation, new and unique forms of co-working are established. The participating artists form the basis for Der Greif’s artistic work. Only with the support and commitment of hundreds of authors and photographers from all over the world Der Greif could develop into an international artistic junction and platform for photography and literature.
The speed and actuality of the web enables Der Greif to present single artists in detail, whose have been previously published in the yearly released magazine. In weekly rotation artists are invited for special artist-features. These features show their published – mainly single – photograph in its original serial context. During these features the artists get the possibility to write as guests in the guest-blog, give closer insights into their ways of working, sources of inspiration as well as personal backgrounds.
In order not to distract from the content Der Greif is a full-content-magazine, a magazine with zero advertising. Der Greif is supported by private supporters and funders, private enterprises, organizations and patrons. Instead of classic print advertisings Der Greif develops more reasonable and contemporary funding possibilities, pointing out cooperation-oportunities. The supporters of Der Greif are mentioned in the particular issue’s colophon, their logo is placed on the website and social social-media-platforms of Der Greif.
Working on the magazine and website the editors of Der Greif reflect theoretical topics regarding photography and literature, translating them in an artistic way. The editors rely on both digital and print-media: Digital media, because of its direct accessibility and actuality vs. print-media, due to its haptic stimuli, direct and emotional experience. Photography and poetry within the magazine reflect the common portfolio-presentation of books and magazines in a critical way. Der Greif combines diverse works of different photographers and authors – established and unknown – in a sensitive layout, establishing ties and references between single photographs and texts. In a constantly accelerating world Der Greif creates an antipole, asking the viewer/reader to take a break and focus.
